Position Summary Information

Job Description Summary

At Lock Haven University coordinating Tutorial Services is defined as faculty work; the successful candidate will be assigned faculty rank and step appropriate to his/her qualifications. Reporting to the Dean, the Coordinator of Tutorial Services is responsible for oversight and direction of all University Tutorial Services, following national accreditation guidelines, including the Math Center and in-person and distance peer-tutoring at the Clearfield Campus. The Director will review the entire operation, making recommendations for implementing robust collaborative peer tutoring practices and tutor training, for web-based tutoring at both campuses, for assessment, for moving toward accreditation, and for a technology rich tutoring environment. Provide development for faculty in peer-led learning techniques linked to the classroom, such as Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) and Supplemental Instruction (SI).

Essential Duties
  • This position may require development and teaching of courses online.
  • Direct all university tutoring services following national accreditation guidelines, i.e., National Tutoring Association (NTA).
  • Create a plan for accreditation from a nationally recognized tutoring organization (i.e. National Tutoring Association (NTA), College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA).
  • Hire, train, and supervise peer tutors.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain technology-based components of tutorial services and supplemental instruction.
  • Develop and maintain on-line tutoring resources.
  • Conduct workshops and marketing initiatives for students and faculty related to provided services.
  • Conduct formative teaching and summative evaluation of group peer tutoring and drop-in tutoring services for continued improvement of services.
  • Engage in administrative tasks, i.e. budget, student assistant supervision, etc.
  • Attend and participate in regular meetings for the Center for Excellence and Inclusion.
  • Attend and participate in regular meetings for the Council of Leaders Advancing Student Success (CLASS).
  • Attend and participate in regular academic department meetings.

Minimum Qualifications

(Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
  • The successful candidate must be able to communicate well and/or perform well in an interview or teaching demonstration and successfully complete the interview process.
  • Required: a masters degree.
  • 3-years of experience and growing responsibility in peer-tutoring and training peer-tutors in higher education.
  • Experience with tutoring technologies and web-based tutoring.
  • Knowledge of peer-facilitiated learning approaches such as collaborative learning, PLTL, SI, etc.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Teaching experience or academic student service in a post-secondary setting
  • Experience with accreditation of higher education tutorial services

Background Clearances

In accordance with Act 153 of 2014 (HB 435), appointment is contingent upon completion of a satisfactory background investigation which includes, but is not limited to, Act 34, Pennsylvania Criminal Record Clearance; Act 151, Child Abuse Clearance; and Act 114, Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Criminal Background Checks.

Appointment is provisional for a single 90 day period provided the “Arrest/Conviction Report and Certification Form” and verification of your application for the three background checks are returned to Deana Hill, Associate VP for Human Resources.

Annual Security Report (Clery Act)

The Lock Haven University’s Annual Security Report and Fire Safety Report are now available on-line or in paper form by request. Federal law requires these reports to contain policy statements, crime and fire safety statistics for the university. The policy statements address the university’s policies, procedures, and programs concerning safety and security, i.e. policies for responding to emergency situations, fire safety procedures and statistics, and sexual offenses, etc. Three years’ worth of statistics is included for certain types of crimes that were reported to have occurred on campus, in on-campus buildings, or off-campus sites property owned or controlled by the university and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to the campus.
