Job Description Summary

Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a tenure-track position in Invertebrate Biology beginning August 18, 2018.

The successful applicant will be an Aquatic Invertebrate Biologist who can specialize in organisms found in Pennsylvania or surrounding regions. Research should be integrative in nature and complement or strengthen existing expertise in our department (www.lockhaven.edu/biology). Candidate must be able to teach Zoology and support other courses for majors and non-majors.

Lock Haven resides in the forested watershed of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, with multiple waterways that have been reported to have the largest number of invertebrates of any stream system in PA. LHU is bordered by PA State Game lands and associated limestone streams which drain them, all of which provide excellent local freshwater field sampling opportunities.
Lock Haven University services approximately 4,000 undergraduates and is located in the scenic mountains of north-central Pennsylvania. LHU is part of 14 universities in the Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education (PASSHE).

The Biology Department, laboratories, and classrooms are located in a new state of the art science center built in 2013.

A field laboratory is also located at the Sieg Conference Center on Fishing Creek (Lamar, PA).

Essential Duties

Teaching assignments may include Zoology and introductory-level major’s and non-major’s lecture and lab courses.

The successful candidate may be asked to support other areas of the current curriculum and develop a specialty course in their area of expertise.

Additional responsibilities include service to the department and the university and scholarly activities normally associated with the department.

The position may require teaching online, via ITV, or at the Clearfield campus.

Specific Duties

The successful applicant may be required to develop and teach courses in an online format.

Minimum Qualifications (Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

An earned doctorate in a biology sub-discipline that complements and strengthens the current Department of Biological Sciences faculty and curriculum is required.

Candidates should have undergraduate teaching experience which may include Teaching Assistantship experience.

The successful candidate must be able to communicate well and/or perform well in an interview or teaching demonstration and successfully complete the interview process.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship, responsiveness to student needs, effective communication skills, and professional development.

Demonstrated experience directing undergraduate research projects and a well-articulated plan for future undergraduate research is highly desirable.

Background Clearances

In accordance with Act 153 of 2014 (HB 435), appointment is contingent upon completion of a satisfactory background investigation which includes, but is not limited to, Act 34, Pennsylvania Criminal Record Clearance; Act 151, Child Abuse Clearance; and Act 114, Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Criminal Background Checks.

Appointment is provisional for a single 90 day period provided the “Arrest/Conviction Report and Certification Form” and verification of your application for the three background checks are returned to Deana Hill, Associate VP for Human Resources.

The Lock Haven University’s Annual Security Report and Fire Safety Report are now available on-line or in paper form by request. Federal law requires these reports to contain policy statements, crime and fire safety statistics for the university. The policy statements address the university’s policies, procedures, and programs concerning safety and security, i.e. policies for responding to emergency situations, fire safety procedures and statistics, and sexual offenses, etc. Three years’ worth of statistics is included for certain types of crimes that were reported to have occurred on campus, in on-campus buildings, or off-campus sites property owned or controlled by the university and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to the campus.
