Job Description Summary

Lock Haven University invites applications for a full-time, temporary faculty position in Computer Science or Information Systems for its Bachelors of Science Applied Computer Science and Information Systems (ACSIS) Program to begin August 18, 2018 and ending May 24, 2019.

We provide a high-quality undergraduate program in Applied Computer Science and Information Systems, and are one of the universities of the Pennsylvania State System for Higher Education (http://www.passhe.edu).

The ACSIS program balances theory with practice and provides students with a unique opportunity to develop core skills in Computer Science while allowing them to specialize in one of four tracks: Mobile and Game Application Development, Networking and Cybersecurity, Data Science, and Interdisciplinary Computing.

Departmental resources include computer classrooms and labs that are available for teaching and research including a Linux lab serving more than forty stations managed by our faculty, a virtual reality lab, and an NVDIA graphics supercomputer.

Essential Duties

Duties consist of teaching twelve credit hours of coursework per semester, maintaining office hours as specified by the collective bargaining agreement and fulfilling departmental duties as assigned.

This position may require development and teaching of online/distance education courses and instruction at the Clearfield Branch campus.

Specific Duties

This position is in support of the Data Science track.

Successful candidates should be able to teach undergraduate courses in Data Science. These courses include Introduction to Data Science, Introductory Programming for Data Science, Data Mining, Advanced Programming for Data Science, and Advanced DB Architectures.

The successful candidate will be familiar with exploratory data analysis with statistical methods, common Data Science programming languages and toolkits (e.g. Python, R, Jupyter, RStudio), fundamental data mining techniques (i.e. association, clustering, classification, etc.), and advanced database system concepts and techniques (e.g. data cleaning, data warehouses, NoSQL database systems). Knowledge of Hadoop Map-Reduce, or other execution engines in the Hadoop ecosystem, and Bigdata workflow automation will be considered a plus.

In addition to Data Science courses, the candidate will be expected to teach classes in the core program or service courses in a supportive role to other departments and programs. These courses can include Java programming, relational database systems, networking, web development, and office applications.

Minimum Qualifications (Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field is required. Terminal degree is required for appointment as Assistant Professor, without the terminal degree candidate will be appointed as Instructor.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness and an explanation of teaching philosophy must be provided.

In addition to the responsibilities and qualifications listed above, the successful candidate must communicate well and perform well in an interview and teaching demonstration and successfully complete the interview process.

Background Clearances

In accordance with Act 153 of 2014 (HB 435), appointment is contingent upon completion of a satisfactory background investigation which includes, but is not limited to, Act 34, Pennsylvania Criminal Record Clearance; Act 151, Child Abuse Clearance; and Act 114, Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Criminal Background Checks.

Appointment is provisional for a single 90 day period provided the “Arrest/Conviction Report and Certification Form” and verification of your application for the three background checks are returned to Deana Hill, Associate VP for Human Resources.
