Job Description Summary

Graduate Assistantships at Lock Haven University provide students with a variety of opportunities for scholarly and professional development designed first and foremost to reinforce and enhance their scholarly pursuits, while providing financial assistance for students in attaining their educational goals. Graduate assistantships give students an opportunity to gain practical experience in teaching, research, academic or administrative service under the guidance of a faculty or staff member. Graduate Assistantships are integral to the students program of study and to the transformation of a student into a professional scholar. They also advance the University mission to recruit highly qualified students to our graduate programs in greater numbers.

Specific Duties

Academic Objectives of the Graduate Assistantship:

1. Increase Program Administration Skills by Assisting with Academic Program Administration
a. Create file for all students
b. Update necessary forms and convert for online completion
c. Assist with revision of handbooks and guidelines for graduate students
d. Coordinate services with Distance Education staff

2. Increase Research and Communication (oral and written) Skills by Assisting with Student Retention
a. Assist with development of program(s) to increase student retention
b. Research and assist with online technology to increase student retention
c. Explore and coordinate ways of connecting undergraduate and graduate students including through the professional organizations and clubs
d. Explore and coordinate ways of connecting undergraduate and graduate alumni

3. Increase Networking, Communication, Research and Grant Writing Skills by assisting with External Funding and Relationships
a. Identify possible sources of outside funding including grant opportunities
b. Investigate and identify new field experience sites
c. Explore development of an advisory board
d. Develop an alumni tracking system

4. Increase Assessment and Data Management Skills by Assisting with Program Assessment
a. Assist with data entry as needs arise and as requested by MS in Health Science Coordinator and/or the Department Chairperson. This may be in Excel, SPSS, TracDat, or some other spreadsheet or data base product.
b. A priority is working with Program Coordinator to assure that all data for our assessment system is up to date. This primarily involves uploading course information, rubrics, reports and other data to the TracDat or D2L.
c. Attend graduate meetings at the request of the MS in Health Science Coordinator for the purposes of discussing progress on assessment data and taking requests from faculty for changes and/or updates to that information.
d. Attend and take minutes for graduate assessment committee meetings.

5. Improve Communication and Networking Skills through Alumni Develop
a. Maintain field experience database and coordinate with alumni development office for use of alumni database
b. Investigate the development of a Master of Health Science Newsletter profiling accomplishments of faculty, students and alumni

Annual Security Report (Clery Act)

The Lock Haven University’s Annual Security Report and Fire Safety Report are now available on-line or in paper form by request. Federal law requires these reports to contain policy statements, crime and fire safety statistics for the university. The policy statements address the university’s policies, procedures, and programs concerning safety and security, i.e. policies for responding to emergency situations, fire safety procedures and statistics, and sexual offenses, etc. Three years’ worth of statistics is included for certain types of crimes that were reported to have occurred on campus, in on-campus buildings, or off-campus sites property owned or controlled by the university and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to the campus.
